Trekking at Bkt Timah Hill
bevlyn February 4th, 2008
I can’t believe I finally trekked Bkt Timah Hill, on 3 Feb 08. And even though it’s one of those things that I had really wished to do, it was realised only because my cousin organised. :p
It was quite fast to reach the ’summit’, and it was a bit unbelievable as I was walking up the steeeeeep hill. Walking backwards turned out to be an easier feat. And of course, I was most of the time always the last in line (though I love to believe it was because I was taking photos half the time). Here’s some of them:
When we first arrived at the ‘entrance’, one of my dear cousins was still munching on her half-eaten piece of banana with walnut bread, and guess what, a monkey spotted her and engaged in an indian dance-cum-chase with our friend as the ‘coconut tree’ in between. In the end, she had no choice but to throw the bread the monkey’s way because it was getting aggressive, and more monkeys were headed our way. I was err, still busy trying to take clear photos of the action lol.
It was the small paths that slaughtered us. I didn’t know that the stairs are so high, and some paths so narrow. It certainly reminded me of my NCC days when we had to rough it out, especially at Teck Whye camp and some i-didn’t-know-they-exist-in-spore forests. Gone were the days when we had to do 70 man’s pushups at one go, handle the oily rifles and M16, stand and march under the sweltering hot sun and risk shouting our lungs out those senseless commands across the parade squares. That was of course, before the ‘welfare’ system kicked in. I suppose I can’t complain that much. I remembered cursing and swearing under my breath too.
Anyways.
I remember panting so hard while I was climbing the stairs. My goodness. Then an old man climbed past me, like it was something he had been doing all his life (maybe that is indeed the case).
Nevertheless I was really happy to finally have done this, and we’ve already planned our next trek - MacRitchie Reservoir!
